Dear Martial Artist,
I started martial arts when I was 5 years old. It took me 6 1/2 years to earn my first degree Black Belt. I had some amazing instructors and some not so good ones along the journey.
Most of us start teaching the same way. Our instructor asks us to assist with part of the class and then we are hooked. My instructor asked me to assist with a class when I was 12 years old. I did not go through any type of training program to be an instructor. I just made it up as I went along. This was good for me but may not have been the best thing for the students.
People who take tickets at Disney go through more training than the average martial arts instructor. This is a travesty. Martial arts instructors have a huge impact either positive or negative on each student’s life.
