I have a passion for helping others. At an early age, my parents taught my sister and I this virtue as members of several volunteer organizations. I have vivid memories of of raising money for the Empty Stocking Fund. My dad and I would purchase toys and clothes for the needy on Christmas Eve.
This passion for helping others helped me become own and operate three very successful martial arts schools. In 2005, I sold all three schools to pursue a passion to help other martial arts school owners grow as people while growing their business.
It wasn’t always easy. In 1994, I purchased my first martial arts school which had 300 students. I quickly took this school from 300 students down to 100 students and almost went out of business. My dad and his friends had loaned me a lot of money to purchase the school. Times were pretty tough.
My choice was to work harder or give up. I took on two other jobs while running the martial arts school. Yes, I could have fired all of the employees but I didn’t. They kept teaching classes while I worked two other jobs.
I know you are asking why in the world would I do that…..
You have to understand. I had this dream! My dream was to own three schools in that small community. I knew these people would all have a big part in it one day. The dream just kept playing in my head over and over again.
I was just stuck and didn’t understand why. I went to all of the business seminars. I visited other successful martial arts schools. “I tried the things they were doing. They just didn’t seem to work in my town.” Then, it all changed.
One day, I realized it was all my fault! I was stuck in my old thinking. As a result, I was stuck in my same old actions. I realized that I had to grow and change as a person to grow my business.
I started a journey to change me first to change my business. It is not about what special marketing tactic or whatever that you need to implement to be successful. Don’t get me wrong, that is part of it.
My road to success was a long journey. I wish I would have known what I know now back then. It would have saved me tens of thousands of dollars, a couple of relationships and a lot of headaches.
